Carl Gustav Jung, the Swiss physician and former student of Freud, reinterpreted Freud’s teachings and developed a new analytical psychology theory, building on the old while creating something fundamentally original.
He based his distinction of personality types on whether a person’s inner motivational energy is directed towards the self or towards the external world.
Accordingly, he classified people as introverted—turned inward—or extroverted—turned outward.
The main characteristic of an introvert is thoughtfulness, emotional reserve, and a tendency towards reflection and anxiety, whereas an extroverted person tends to be cheerful, energetic, quick to respond, and enjoys forming social connections.
Later, Dr William Moulton Marston, an American psychologist, further developed Jung’s theory. He subdivided these two main groups, distinguishing between task-oriented and relationship-oriented types within them.
This created four groups, each marked with a different colour. By completing this type of personality test, you can gain insight into your defining personality traits, discover your “strengths,” and also identify areas for “development.” This is why helping professionals often use it in self-awareness courses, career guidance, and it is also a useful tool for managers, team leaders, and HR professionals.
It can assist managers and team leaders in deciding how and to whom to assign certain types of tasks, and also how to communicate more effectively and efficiently with team members. Beyond task allocation, it improves workplace communication and the quality of professional relationships.
