When You Realise You Are Not Living Your Own Life

When you realise you are not living your own life…

Many people choose a career path at a young age that is shaped not by their own inner calling, but by parental expectations, social norms, or the pursuit of financial security. They enrol in a degree programme, earn their qualification, and begin working in the field. Years pass, yet something feels off. More and more often, a thought arises: “This is not my path.”

I experienced this myself. It was my mother’s idea that I attend a secondary school specialising in economics, followed by training as a certified accountant. From there, the road led straight to an economics degree. My parents were very proud — I became the first person in our family to earn a university diploma.

But it didn’t feel that way for me…

Perhaps you sensed from the very beginning that this career was not truly yours, yet you invested your energy because it felt like an obligation. Or maybe it was enjoyable at first, but over the years it gradually lost its appeal. By now, you may have reached the point where you can no longer postpone change.

But how do you do that?

How do you leave behind a seemingly secure career and step into an entirely new direction?

In this article, I will guide you through the self-awareness and practical process that can help you step out of old frameworks with confidence and begin walking your own path.

Acknowledge Your Feelings — and Don’t Dismiss Your Doubts

First of all, it is completely natural to feel fear, uncertainty, or even guilt at the thought of making a change. After all, you have invested a great deal of time and energy into this career.

Common thoughts at this stage include:

“I should be grateful that I have a job at all.”

“I can’t be so selfish — others are struggling just to make a living.”

“If I leave now, it means all those years were wasted.”

These feelings are normal, but it is important to examine whether they are actually true. Often, they turn out to be deeply ingrained beliefs that have been holding us back from moving forward all along.

What Has Held You Back So Far? — Recognising Limiting Beliefs

Many people stay in an unsuitable career not because they see no way out, but because internal fears are holding them in place. These fears often stem from beliefs absorbed in childhood or shaped by our environment.

Some of the most common limiting beliefs include:

“It’s already too late to change.”

“I’m not good at anything else.”

“I’ll disappoint my parents or those around me if I quit.”

Take time to reflect on how true these thoughts really are, and explore what options may still be available to you.

How to Find a New Direction When You Realise This Is Not Your Life

Once you decide that you want to make a change, the next step is to identify what genuinely inspires you. Here are a few questions that can help:

What would I happily do even if I weren’t paid for it?

Which activities energise and uplift me?

What skills do I have that could be transferred to a new field?

Make a list and begin exploring your possibilities.

Start Small

You do not have to change everything overnight. Begin by learning about the new field, studying it, and trying small experimental projects. Moving forward in small steps can significantly reduce uncertainty.

I personally took a bold step — I decided from one day to the next and resigned from my job at the bank. However, not everyone feels able to do this, and that is completely understandable. For those who value security, or who do not yet have savings to cover at least six months, I do not usually recommend this approach.

The right pace depends on your personality. During self-awareness work and within the artist-coaching sessions, we explore this together and find the solution that suits you best.

When you realise that you are not living your own life, the most important thing is this:

Do not be afraid to take responsibility for your own happiness.

If you have ever felt that you are not walking your own path, then now is the time to make a change.
